The building for Bauhaus museum in our opinion should be simply formed just for the convenience of exposition inside, but in the same time demonstrate challenging attitude in the way of the thought of architecture because that was the way of Bauhaus school. Not reproduce buildings of historical styles, but push further today’s achievements, and Beyond a museum extension, our ambition was to provide an extension to the city and the park.
The building of Museum divided by 7th floors according to a starting point of a narrative about the Bauhaus Dessau: prologue and 6 topoi. Every exposition of these themes stored in a separate volume and laid one above each other in chronological order. The volume metaphorically covered by veil creating the effect of conceptually and physically preservation and protection from what we have been accustomed in our everyday life as well as excites passion to penetrate what beyond the veil and see what’s underneath.
Also according to geometry design scenario, we apply the idea of a vertical museum, first, because it will take a minimum possible of constriction area, which is the existing landscape of the park and doesn’t effect on existing trees. Second, it allows us purely divide the building according to main exposition arias, to show the idea on the facade of the building, and allows visually interact with city especially with the famousness parts of it.
On another hand, the vertical museum will be more iconic and dominate to be obvious in the city which makes the building can be seen from long distances because this place becomes a starting point for introducing Dessau history.
Museum journey starts from the lower floor in order to do the way of visitors of exposition convenience, and in the upper floor, after visitor finishing them exhibition journey they start review from seeing a nice panorama of Dessau and then goes to introduce himself with his history. The volume of building represented as a simple rectangular solid form with 7 stored “statements” of Bauhaus and floors of building starts to interact with the city. Building floors are oriented to objects, which are built Valter Gropius within Dessau so that you can see them from the window.
The building itself should present progressive achievements in architecture and engineering and in the same time has strong and pure character, advocate innovations and keep traditions! The appearance of the building should be memorable for visitors and pleasant for citizens, so, that it can attract visitors to make Dessau more popular among tourists. The visitors should not have a chance to mix up this building as a pretender to historical style or to look like modernize the old building, it should be simply a just neutral shell and cover for treasures of Bauhaus, to be solitary in general ideas of purity an integrity!
The building also implies a wide use in sense of daily communication with citizens and visitors. According to the program, there will present the number of activities, workshops events spaces, the restaurant where you can access despite the exposition working hours! Secondary use makes the building more integrated into the existing situation and makes leisure of people more interesting. Thus building elegant shape become harmonic part of landscape related with it through the visually transparent first floor, which is made mainly from glass and allows to penetrate inside building or just cross it through without going inside.
The exposition area has flexible planning with dynamic septa, it is possible to organize there any variety of planning according to demands of exposition (size, viewing scenario).
Only the abstract cubes with the outer perforated veil which provide daylight for the exhibition levels and in same time create indoor shading system and also help the building to be visible from the outside and meld harmoniously in the ensemble of the existing historical Bauhaus architecture style.
The newly created network of paths, squares, and green areas gives rise to a gracefully built public recreational area. Through the addition of the internal and external atriums, visitors can access the view over all of Dessau.
